When Your Roof Says Enough Is Enough

A guide to replacing your industrial or commercial roof

For any industrial or commercial property owner, the roof of your building is more than just panels and beams – it’s the shield protecting your people, assets, stock and daily operations from Mother Nature. But even the most formidable shields need attention, and sometimes, they must be replaced.

Ignoring a failing industrial or commercial roofing system can be a recipe for disaster, leading to leaks, health and safety hazards, and costly downtime in manufacturing environments. So, how do you know when to say goodbye to your old roof and replace it with a new one?

Signs your roof needs replacing

  • Age: Roofs start to deteriorate over time, and their performance to withstand the elements becomes challenged. This deterioration could result in leaks or metal de-lamination of the coating, creating issues such as rusting or cut-edge corrosion.
  • Leaks: This is a big red flag, indicating compromised waterproofing and the potential for further structural damage that could threaten the integrity of your property.
  • Visible damage: Missing or broken panels, cracks, rust, cut-edge corrosion, and sagging indicate a deteriorating roof nearing its end.
  • Energy inefficiency: An outdated roof may not be adequately insulated, leading to higher heating and cooling costs.
  • Safety concerns: Loose or damaged roofing materials pose a hazard to personnel and equipment within the building.

Planning your roof replacement project

Replacing an industrial or commercial roofing system can be a significant task, especially when working in live situations. Careful planning is crucial to a successful outcome; here are some key steps to ensure a smooth transformation:

  • Conduct a thorough roof inspection: Hire a professional roofing contractor to assess the condition of your roof and recommend the best course of action. Our drone surveys offer a safe, quick, detailed way to inspect your roof.
  • Consider your options: Depending on your budget and needs, you might choose a complete strip and replacement or an overclad option to make your property more energy-efficient.
  • Request at least three quotes: Compare quotes from reputable roofing contractors (like ourselves) to ensure you get the best value for a like-for-like system.
  • Don’t forget permits and regulations: Ensure you obtain all necessary permits and comply with local building regulations.

The benefits of a new roof

Investing in a new industrial or commercial roof offers a host of benefits. These include:

  • Enhanced protection: A new roofing system shields your property and operations from the elements.
  • Lower energy bills: Modern roofs can incorporate reflective surfaces and better insulation, leading to lower heating and cooling energy costs.
  • Reduced maintenance costs: A new roof requires less frequent repairs and maintenance, saving you money in the long run.
  • Increased property value: A new roof with a long lifespan can boost the value of your building.
  • Peace of mind: Knowing your roof is in good condition provides peace of mind and allows you to focus on running your business effectively.

Remember, replacing your roof is not just an expense; it’s an investment that will safeguard the future of your building and business. By addressing potential problems proactively and choosing the right solution, you can ensure a safe, efficient, and protected environment for your staff and operations for years to come.

Don’t let a failing roof become a costly disaster – we can help you take control of your building’s future! Contact our commercial team at 0800 027 2244 or email our commercial team here to learn more about our award-winning industrial and commercial roofing solutions.

Maximise your Industrial or Commercial Roof Space

In today’s rapidly evolving business landscape, sustainability is no longer a buzzword and has become a crucial factor in tackling climate change.

As industries and commercial organisations navigate the complexities of reducing their environmental impact and operational costs, adopting renewable energy technology such as solar photovoltaic (PV) panels has become both a credible option and a wise investment.

One particularly successful strategy involves maximising the roof space of large industrial or commercial properties with solar PV installations. This renewable energy solution offers a dual benefit of cost savings and carbon footprint reduction with the unique opportunity to harness the untapped potential of rooftop real estate.

Cost Savings:

Investing in a commercial solar PV system enables organisations to generate their own electricity, reducing reliance on traditional grid power. By developing otherwise unused roof space, businesses can effectively offset their electricity consumption, leading to substantial cost savings on future energy bills.

The initial investment in a commercial solar PV system is recovered over a relatively short period through reduced energy expenses. This makes it a financially prudent decision for businesses looking to optimise their bottom line.

Environmental Impact:

Commercial solar PV systems harness the copious energy of sunlight, a practically limitless and renewable resource. By switching to solar power, businesses can significantly decrease their dependence on fossil fuels, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating their environmental impact.

This aligns with corporate sustainability and net zero goals by contributing to broader efforts that tackle climate change and help preserve the planet for our future generations.

Revenue Generation:

Beyond offsetting electricity costs, businesses can leverage commercial solar PV installations to generate additional revenue streams. Mechanisms such as peer-to-peer energy trading allow surplus electricity produced by the solar PV system to be exported to the grid, providing opportunities for revenue generation and an enhanced return on investment.

Solar PV installations transform unused industrial and commercial rooftops into revenue-generating assets, further incentivising businesses to invest in and embrace renewable energy technology.

Summary

Maximising industrial or commercial roof space for solar PV installations represents an effective strategy for reducing electricity costs, decreasing carbon emissions, and enhancing sustainability.

By harnessing the abundant power of the sun, businesses can unlock significant economic and environmental benefits while demonstrating leadership in corporate responsibility, which benefits stakeholders.

As the global transition to clean energy accelerates, leveraging solar PV technology offers a convincing pathway toward a more sustainable and resilient future for businesses and communities alike. Embracing solar power isn’t just a smart business decision – it’s an investment towards a brighter, cleaner, and more sustainable future for everyone.

Contact us at 0800 027 2244 to explore how commercial solar PV can transform your rooftop into a renewable energy powerhouse. We can help you build a brighter, cleaner, and more sustainable future for your business and our planet.

Honouring an Argyle Legend

Retain Limited is delighted to be able to welcome David Anderson to Home Park on Saturday to watch Plymouth Argyle FC take on Leeds United in the Sky Bet Championship early kick-off.

The name Anderson will prick up a few ears amongst the Green Army, and rightly so. David is the brother of the late Peter Anderson, who is an Argyle legend. Peter played over 250 games and scored almost 50 goals for the Pilgrims from 1953 to 1962.

Born in the Devonport district of Plymouth in 1932, Peter was one of the best home-grown talents to have played for the club. As a winger, he could easily play with both feet and mix it up on either flank. In his debut season, he helped his team finish fourth in what is now the Championship division.

David is a lifelong supporter of the Pilgrims, having spent most of his life living in Britain’s Ocean City. He marked his 89th birthday just before Christmas and will celebrate his platinum (70th) wedding anniversary later this year.

This is a remarkable achievement, and we’re sure the King will be sending a message of congratulations to commemorate this special occasion.

As a principal partner of Plymouth Argyle FC, we’re thrilled to be in a position to support David and his family so he can cheer on his beloved Pilgrims at a stadium which his brother once graced. We hope you enjoy the game and the hospitality, David!

Blurred out man with a Movember moustache with the offical Movember logo

Movember: Grow a Moustache for a Meaningful Cause

November is no longer just a month to welcome colder weather and prepare for the holiday season. It’s also the time when many men worldwide ditch their razors and let their facial hair flourish for a noble cause known as ‘Movember.’

Since 2003, this annual event has gained prominence over the years, encouraging men to grow moustaches to raise awareness and funds for crucial men’s health issues.

The Movember Movement

Movember, a combination of moustache and November, began in Melbourne (Australia) 20 years ago. The idea was simple yet impactful. Men would start clean-shaven on November 1st and grow moustaches throughout the month, sparking conversations about men’s health issues along the way.

Raising Awareness for Men’s Health

Movember primarily focuses on raising awareness about three significant men’s health concerns:

1. Prostate cancer: This initiative aims to educate men about the risks of prostate cancer, promote early detection, and support those affected by the disease.

2. Testicular cancer: By encouraging self-examination and early detection, Movember seeks to increase survival rates for testicular cancer.

3. Mental health: The Movember Foundation highlights the importance of mental health and strives to reduce the stigma surrounding men seeking help for issues like depression and anxiety.

Growing Moustaches for a Cause

One of the campaign’s distinctive features is the moustache-growing challenge. Participants become ‘Mo Bros’ by starting the month clean-shaven and growing moustaches, which serve as conversation starters about men’s health.

The Impact of Movember

The men’s health campaign has made a significant impact over the years:

  •
  • It has funded over 1,250 men’s health projects in over 20 countries

  •
  • It has supported breakthrough research, providing critical insights into various men’s health issues

  •
  • It has inspired countless conversations about men’s health and encouraged men to take charge of their well-being

Get Involved

Participating in Movember is simple and fun:

  •
  • Start clean-shaven: Begin with a clean slate on November 1st

  •
  • Grow a moustache: Cultivate your moustache throughout the month

  •
  • Please spread the word: Share your journey on social media, educate your friends and family, and encourage them to donate to the cause

  •
  • Raise funds: Collect donations to support men’s health initiatives through the official Movember website

Movember is not just about growing facial hair; it’s about making a difference in men’s lives. So, this November, join the Movember movement and let your moustache be a symbol of support for men’s health. Together, we can create a healthier future for men everywhere.

Image shows cut edge corrosion on one side of the property and the other side has been cured of this type of corrosion

In Focus – Cut Edge Corrosion

Corrosion is a persistent challenge many industries, infrastructure, and everyday objects face. However, cut edge corrosion is a less well-known form of corrosion, which often occurs in metal structures and can lead to significant damage if left untreated.

This blog explores the causes, prevention strategies, and treatment methods for cut edge corrosion in industrial and commercial roofing systems.

What Is Cut Edge Corrosion?

Cut edge corrosion, also known as edge peel corrosion, occurs along the cut edges of coated metal sheets or panels, typically used in construction, cladding, or industrial settings. This phenomenon primarily affects materials such as steel and can compromise the structural integrity and aesthetics of a building or structure over time.

Causes of Cut Edge Corrosion

This corrosion is chiefly caused by the exposure of raw metal edges that were originally coated for protection. Several factors contribute to this type of corrosion:

    • Weathering: exposed edges of metal sheet panels are highly susceptible to the elements, including rain, wind, snow, and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Over time, the variable weather conditions can break down the protective coating, leaving the metal vulnerable to corrosion.

    • Incorrect installation: inadequate sealing or installation methods can leave gaps, overlaps, or exposed edges in metal sheet cladding. These gaps provide entry points for moisture and oxygen, accelerating corrosion.

    • Coating degradation: coatings on metal surfaces degrade naturally over time, especially in harsh environments in coastal or exposed locations. When this happens, it leaves the underlying metal exposed and vulnerable to corrosion.

Prevention of Cut Edge Corrosion

Preventing this type of corrosion is critical to extending the lifespan of an industrial or commercial roofing system and the structure it sits on. It can also minimise expensive repair costs – here are some preventive measures:

    • Quality coatings: start with high-quality protective coatings designed to withstand the specific environmental conditions of the site. Regular roofing inspections and appropriate maintenance can help ensure that coatings remain effective.

    • Correct installation: employ experienced professionals, such as Retain Limited, to install metal sheet panels and ensure that all cut edges are sealed correctly to prevent the ingress of moisture.

    • Design considerations: when designing structures, consider using coatings with extended longevity. This can help reduce the frequency of any repair and maintenance work.

    • Regular inspection and maintenance: conduct routine inspections to identify early signs of cut edge corrosion. Address any issues promptly to prevent further damage. At Retain Limited, we are proud to offer repair and maintenance services and a drone roof inspection service.

Treatment of Cut Edge Corrosion

If corrosion is identified, it’s essential to take immediate action to prevent further deterioration of the roofing system. A professional roofing contractor, such as Retain Roofing, can take the following steps:

    • Clean the affected area: remove any loose rust and coating materials from the affected area using appropriate tools and techniques.

    • Surface preparation: prepare the surface by abrasive methods, such as sanding or abrasive blasting, to create a clean, rust-free surface. This will allow for proper adhesion of a new coating.

    • Repainting: apply a high-quality, corrosion-resistant coating to the cleaned and prepared surface. Choose a coating suitable for the specific environment to provide long-lasting protection.

    • Regular maintenance: implement a schedule to inspect and touch up coated edges as needed to prevent future corrosion.

Our Conclusion

Cut edge corrosion is a common problem in metal sheet roofing systems, but it can be managed with suitable preventive measures and prompt treatment. By understanding the causes, prevention strategies, and treatment methods for cut edge corrosion, we can ensure our industrial and commercial roofing systems offer longevity and structural integrity.

Regular inspections, quality coatings, and correct installation practices are all crucial factors in combating this form of corrosion and preserving the life of metal sheet roofing systems. Contact the Retain Roofing team on 0800 027 2244 or email us here for a free, no-obligation quotation if your industrial or commercial property is suffering from corrosion.

july-hottest-month-web

The Hottest Month

Scientists are already calculating that last month will be the hottest month on record and is likely to be the warmest month humanity has ever experienced. As heat waves and wildfires savaged many parts of Europe, Asia and North America, global heat is rising faster than attempts to counteract it.

Human-caused global warming made July 2023 hotter for four out of five people on Earth, with more than 2 billion people feeling climate change-boosted warmth daily.

Over 6.5 billion people, or 81% of the world’s population, sweated through at least one day, where climate change significantly affected the average daily temperature. This staggering fact is included in a new report published by Climate Central, a science non-profit.

Researchers observed 4,711 cities worldwide and found climate change fingerprints in 4,019 of them for July. The new study calculated that burning coal, oil and natural gas had made it three times more likely to be hotter on at least one day in those cities.

In the US, where the climate effect was most prominent in Florida, more than 244 million people felt more significant heat due to climate change during July. “We really are experiencing climate change just about everywhere,” said Climate Central Vice President for Science Andrew Pershing.

Easing the effects of global warming requires collective efforts from individuals, governments, and businesses. Businesses can significantly mitigate climate change due to their substantial influence on resource consumption, emissions, and innovation.

We have recently designed, installed and commissioned a 56kWp commercial solar energy system for YMCA Plymouth. This commercial solar energy system will help the organisation save money on their electricity bills, but, more significantly, it will help reduce the building’s carbon output by almost 11,000KG per year.

We all have a small part to play in fighting global warming, but businesses hold the key to reversing the damage already caused. UK Green Business Grants and Loans

Everyone has a role to play when tackling the current global climate crisis, and small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) are no expectation. Global warming is here and clear to see. Record temperatures were recorded here in the UK last year, and now places in Europe, such as Greece and Italy, are experiencing unbearable heatwaves, with wildfires destroying land and property.

The climate crisis has reached the point where businesses no longer have a choice about going green and ultimately achieving net zero status. It’s now quite simply a case of when rather than if.

The good news is that becoming a sustainable organisation is easier and cheaper than you think. Various financial support options are available to help SMEs become more sustainable. Here are a few possibilities you might want to consider:

UK government

Almost £5 billion of government funding is available to help UK businesses as part of its commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2050. The funding will be awarded to businesses that invest in green technologies to increase energy efficiency or reduce carbon emissions.

The list is continuously being updated as new funding becomes available, so please keep an eye on the government’s green funding webpage for current openings. The website can be found here.

Also, check out the Department for Environmental, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). They run initiatives to help businesses become more sustainable, and you can sign up to receive their email alerts here.

Green loans from financial institutions

Many banks and financial institutions offer loans and products tailored to support green businesses and initiatives. These loans can be used for various purposes, such as renewable energy installations, energy efficiency improvements, or other sustainable projects.

UK banks, including Lloyds (Clean Growth Financing Initiative), NatWest (Green Loans) and HSBC (Green SME Fund), are currently offering schemes that are worth checking out.

Local authority funding

Some local authorities may offer grants or funding programs to support renewable energy projects within their control. These schemes can vary depending on your specific region, so it’s good practice to check with your local council for any available or planned funding opportunities. If you’re unsure what local authority your business falls under, just visit gov.uk/find-local-council and enter your business’s postcode.

It’s essential to thoroughly research each grant or loan scheme to understand its eligibility criteria, the application process, and any specific requirements. These schemes will have a shelf life or a certain amount of funding available, so it’s difficult to say how long they will last.

If you would like to know more about our commercial solar Pv solutions and the positive difference a renewable energy system can make to your business and the planet, please contact Retain Energy’s Alex Isted at 0800 027 2244 or alex@retainlimited.com.

ERS Gold Status Achieved

The Directors of award-winning Retain Limited are thrilled to announce that they achieved the prestigious Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Gold Award. This accolade follows the ERS silver and bronze awards which were attained last year.

Achieving the Gold Award reflects our continued commitment to supporting the armed forces community in a manner that aligns with the values of the Armed Forces Covenant.

Through a three-tier approach of bronze, silver and gold, the ERS scheme acknowledges employers’ different levels of commitment. It allows the Ministry of Defence to publicly thank and reward organisations for their support.

Retain Limited is privileged to have worked closely with the Royal Marines Charity (RMA) over the last few years. The RMA is a fantastic charitable organisation that provides lifetime support to the Royal Marines Family by any means required. We are delighted to offer our support, including mentoring and career opportunities for former service personnel.

With many of our employees previously serving in the Royal Marines, including Founder and Director Jamie Gibbs and Technical Director Darren Notman, we endeavour to offer employment opportunities to help former Royal Marines and other armed forces personnel adjust to their new lives as British civilians.

Retain Limited also strives to help educate, train and create bespoke career pathways tailored to individual skill sets to enable and encourage a successful and fulfilling life post-service.

In response to receiving the ERS Gold Award, Jamie Gibbs said: “We are truly honoured to have gained ERS Gold Award status.

“This is such a proud moment for everyone associated with Retain as we receive recognition for the endeavours we employ as a business to support the armed forces and veterans community.

“To have received all three ERS awards within 18 months is a wonderful achievement and must be applauded.

“Our new gold status further demonstrates to our staff and clients that we fully support the armed forces community and are a safe and trusted employer.”

The colour gold is familiar at Retain as we have been year-on-year winners of the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) Gold Award since 2016 for our ongoing commitment to health and safety.

Furthermore, we have recently announced our support for Plymouth Argyle Football Club by agreeing to be a principal sponsor for the next three seasons. A gold-coloured Retain logo appears on the Argyle playing shorts, reaffirming our gold standard in everything we do as a trusted three-in-one contractor operating in the construction and renewable energy sectors.

Retain is Going for Gold with the Green Army

Plymouth Argyle FC has launched their new kit for the 2023/24 season today, and we’re thrilled to see the Retain Limited logo on the back of their playing shorts. We announced that we had become a principal sponsor of Argyle back in April, and today is the day we have all been waiting for.

Those of you who are familiar with the Retain branding will notice that the logo on the shorts looks a bit different. The Retain logo is in gold, perfectly aligning with our gold approach and the gold standard in everything we do as a three-in-one contractor in the construction and renewable energy industries.

The colour gold is well acquainted at Retain as we have been year-on-year winners of the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) Gold Award since 2016. This accolade reaffirms our ongoing commitment to providing first-class health and safety procedures throughout the Retain Limited group of companies.

Furthermore, we have recently applied for the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Gold Award, which encourages employers to support defence and inspire others to do the same. We were awarded the ERS Silver Award in October 2022 and are proud to be an active Armed Forces Covenant member.

Jamie Gibbs, Founder and Director of Retain Limited, said: “The new playing kit looks fantastic, and we’re delighted to support Plymouth Argyle for the next three seasons as a principal sponsor.

“I have watched the club go from strength to strength over the last few years, and to see Argyle back in the Sky Bet Championship, with the Retain logo on their shorts, is a wonderful feeling for my team and I.

“I would like to take the opportunity to wish Steven Schumacher and his team all the best for the new season ahead of their first friendly tomorrow night against Hearts in Spain.”

Mental Health Awareness Week 2023

Anxiety is the theme for this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week. Anxiety is a normal emotion that we all have, but it can sometimes get out of control and affect us physically and mentally, leading to mental health problems.

Many things can lead to anxiety, such as exam pressures, starting a new job (or losing one), relationships or other significant life events. We can also get anxious about money-related issues and the inability to meet our basic needs, like heating our home or putting food on the table. But anxiety can be made easier to manage and become less of a burden.

Focusing on the topic of anxiety for this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week will increase people’s awareness and understanding of what anxiety really is. The Mental Health Foundation aims to provide information on what can help prevent it from becoming an issue.

Alexa Knight, Director of England at the Mental Health Foundation, commented: “We’ve chosen anxiety as the Mental Health Awareness Week theme this year to kickstart a nationwide conversation, encouraging people to share their own experiences and any helpful ideas on how they manage anxiety.”

Together, the Mental Health Foundation have stated they will keep up the pressure to demand change – ensuring that improving mental health is a key priority for the government and society.

Help is always available, and there are many things that we can all do to protect our mental health by effectively managing anxiety. However, what works for one person will be different to another person.

Things that might be helpful include being active, getting outdoors amongst nature, practising breathing techniques, obtaining support to tackle money worries or eating well. Talking to a friend or family member, or spending time with your loved ones, is often an excellent first step to get on the right track.

The Mental Health Foundation has reviewed the evidence for what works to manage anxiety and brought together their top recommendations, which can be found here. If anxiety severely affects your everyday life, you should contact your GP as soon as possible, who can offer additional support and help.

No one should struggle alone.

Health, Safety and Environment in Roofing Awards 2022

The 2022 National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) Health, Safety and Environment Awards judging is now complete, and we’re delighted to announce that we have struck gold – again!

This is the seventh consecutive year that we have won the Gold Award from the NFRC’s annual health and safety awards which reaffirms our ongoing commitment to delivering first-class health and safety policies throughout the Retain Limited group of companies.

The NFRC received a total of 116 entries for this year’s awards. Participating companies achieved either a gold or silver award, which indicates the quality of the submissions they received.

NFRC members receiving awards are recognised as leaders in health, safety and environment management, demonstrating their commitment to ensuring the highest possible health and safety standards for their workers.

In addition, the NFRC state that some of their members went above and beyond with a detailed explanation of not only how they manage health and safety risks but also how they engage their workers in that process to drive culture change in the management of workplace risks.

We are also delighted to confirm that Retain Roofing was highlighted as one of the companies that went above and beyond the high standard that already exists throughout the submissions.

Jamie Gibbs, Founder and Director of Retain Limited, commented: “To win the Gold Award again is a massive testament to the team, both on and off the building site, and fully demonstrates the importance of health and safety in the make-up of our companies.

“Despite our year-on-year success in these awards that the NFRC brilliantly puts together, we are not guaranteed any kind of accolade.

“I would therefore like to thank our Health and Safety Coordinator and the on-site teams who have worked hard and shown fantastic dedication to achieve this award.”

Why Health and Safety in Construction Matters

Being competent in health and safety practices is a massive priority in most sectors, but workplace safety can be a matter of life and death in the construction industry.

Prioritising health and safety matters in construction are crucial to ensure the well-being of workers, reduce accidents and injuries, and minimise the hazards associated with high-risk construction projects.

Here are some ways to prioritise health and safety in construction:

      • Develop a positive health and safety culture: Construction companies must prioritise safety as a core value and develop a safety culture that emphasises the importance of safety for all workers.

      • Conduct regular safety training: Safety training should be conducted regularly to educate workers about the hazards of construction work and how to avoid them. This can include training on the proper use of equipment, fall protection, hazard communication, and other safety areas.

      • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE): Employers should provide and require appropriate PPE, such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toed boots.

      • Conduct regular safety inspections: These on-site inspections should identify any hazards and risks before accidents occur.

      • Implement safety protocols: Construction companies should implement safety protocols for specific tasks, such as excavation or working at heights, to protect all workers from hazards.

      • Collaborate with workers: Employers should work closely with workers to identify and mitigate hazards, as workers are often the most familiar with their tasks and the daily risks they face.

      • Ensure compliance with regulations: Employers should comply with all applicable safety regulations and standards, including OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulations.

Overall, prioritising health and safety in construction requires employers, workers, and stakeholders to create a safe and healthy work environment to reduce and eliminate any on-site risks.

Protecting your workforce reduces absences and helps make your workplace more efficient and productive. Research has proven that workers are more productive in workplaces that are committed to proactive health and safety practices. Also, reducing downtime caused by accidents or illness means a less disrupted workplace which can save your business money.

Our Commitment to Health and Safety

Our industry-leading on-site safety performance results from a continuous drive to reduce risk through our uncompromising approach to health and safety, which goes above and beyond standard industry requirements.

Our key industry relationships reflect our collaborative efforts to ensure we deliver high-quality service and safety with all our projects monitored via our health and safety monthly audit. Scaffolding Safety – Working at Height

Working at height poses many risks, and it’s essential to take the necessary steps to remain safe at all times, including following government guidance in the form of WAHR (Working at Height Regulations) 2005. In this blog, you’ll read some of the ways that Retain Limited keep our employees safe when working at height.

Retain Limited employs well-trained and competent individuals to carry out scaffolding jobs, and we also provide our employees with ongoing training to ensure that everyone has the knowledge to carry out their tasks professionally and safely. This is one of the first steps in creating a safe work environment when working at height, whether for roofing, scaffolding or installing commercial solar panels.

It ensures that suitable safety precautions are taken, and the right equipment is used for the job. It is also important to check the suitability and condition of safety equipment before use, as some situations may not require such drastic safety measures.

Preparation before carrying out work is essential and is carried out daily by our employees. Taking into account the expected weather conditions, the overall safety of the roof (if applicable), ensuring that falling materials are either mitigated completely or sufficient measures are taken to ensure no one will be injured, storing materials safely and having a set plan for any emergencies that may happen.

Reporting any safety concerns before work is carried out is also essential, which is why we provide our employees with up-to-date training when necessary. It’s also just as crucial for our employees to be well-trained in using safety equipment correctly and safely at all times.

Being accredited by SMAS (Safety Management Advisory Services) among many other organisations within our company means that we have a responsibility to be leaders in Health and Safety procedures within our industry. Our employees are also trained in CISRS (Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme) standards.

These are just some of the ways we help to keep our employees and customers safe when carrying out tasks, from the start of the project to the very end. There are many other legislations that we work closely with, which form the backbone of our business.

    PPE

Changes to UK PPE law: How will it affect you?

On the 6th April 2022 there will be a new update for PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) regulations that will affect the way you distribute PPE to people who work for you

At Retain Limited, we go above and beyond to ensure the safety of all people who work for us and with us.

Previously, the PPE regulations only affected limb (a) workers. These are the people that are officially employed by you, an employee. They will have an employment contract with a specific number of hours to work, a regular salary or wage and will have holiday and sick leave allowance.

The new PPE regulations now affect limb (b) workers. These are people who aren’t directly employed by you and are not self-employed. They may be an agency worker, freelancer or casual worker. They won’t receive the same benefits as your regular employees.

The new PPE regulations will not affect self-employed workers. Self-employed workers usually run their own business and are responsible for it, work flexibly and provide their own equipment and tools.

Alongside PPE, it is paramount to conduct regular risk assessments to make sure that all safety risks are reduced to a minimum. PPE works alongside your other health and safety measures, supplementing the overall safety of the work environment. Head over to this Peninsula blog to find out ways to assess your PPE needs.

Gold Winner 2021: NFRC Health & Safety in Roofing Awards

We have struck gold for the 6th year in a row in the NFRC Health and Safety in Roofing Awards

The NFRC (National Federation of Roofing Contractors) is one of the largest, well-respected and reputable roofing trade association in the UK. They promote quality contractors and products and ensure that its members are leading by example within the roofing industry.

As a member of the NFRC, it is our responsibility to ensure that we adhere to the high standards set out by ourselves, NFRC and the Government. This includes quality of work, materials we use, health and safety and the training of our employees. It is the backbone of our business and is part of our core principles.

There are numerous laws and legislations that are relevant to health and safety within the construction industry that we adhere closely to:

Health and Safety at Work Act (1974)

    Work at Height Regulations (2005)

Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (1999)

Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (2015)

Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (1998)

Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (1998)

The NFRC have said, “We received a total of 116 entries, with participating companies either achieving a gold or silver award, which is a testament to the quality of the submissions. In addition to this, some members went above and beyond with a detailed explanation of not only how they manage health and safety risks, but also how they engage their workers in that process to drive culture change in the management of workplace risks. The judges felt it only right to give these companies a special mention in the Member Bulletin.”

The Current State of the Construction Industry

The recent news that the construction industry is facing significant issues with supply and demand for both building materials and skilled labour comes as no surprise to Retain Limited founder and director, Jamie Gibbs.

Gibbs founded Retain back in 2008 and has experienced sustainable growth throughout this time but these well-documented issues have proved to be a real challenge for the day-to-day running of his company.

“What we are currently witnessing across the construction industry is predominantly a knock-on effect from the problems facing the logistics industry,” Gibbs said.

“The logistics industry was already struggling to meet demands after the Brexit fall-out and the COVID-19 pandemic has added further disruption with ongoing sea and road freight issues.

“This has resulted in much higher costs for building materials across the board and this has made managing our supplies and projects even harder. I believe this is more extreme for smaller companies who rely on regular stock deliveries at builders’ merchants which simply isn’t there at the moment.

“The larger construction companies that have greater purchasing power are able to bulk buy and stockpile the materials they need which are at a detriment to everyone else who is trying to finish an existing project or even start a new one.

“It’s a classic economic example of demand exceeding supply where prices go through the roof as we’ve previously experienced in other industries such as farming and more recently housing.”

It has recently been reported by Glenigan (for the National Federation of Roofing Contractors) that the second quarter of the year continued to follow suit as the first with sustained growth in workloads and new projects are given the green light by local planning authorities.

Many industrial and commercial roofing contractors, including Retain, have also reported difficulties in recruiting skilled labour to physically get on site and do the work they have on their books.

Throw in the supply shortage and the rising cost of materials and there is growing pressure on companies operating in the construction industry to complete projects on time which will add further delay to the sector’s recovery since the pandemic hit our shores some 18 months ago.

Gibbs added: “If these shortage problems aren’t addressed and resolved soon it will only result in a further squeeze on the everyday costs and margins for roofing contractors which makes it difficult to plan ahead with confidence.”

Why Health & Safety Matters to Us

We are delighted to have secured another gold award in health and safety from the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC). This is the fifth consecutive year we have struck gold and further highlights our ongoing commitment to our successful health and safety programme.

As a professional industrial and commercial roofing contractor, our most common residual safety risk is working at height on roofs. We cannot stress enough how important health and safety is to us – it is quite frankly the backbone of our business and the rock-solid foundations we’ve built our business on.

We appreciate that this can come at a cost but at the same time you are getting excellent value for money for a specialised service that cuts no corners and does everything by the book. We do this to not only protect the well-being of our workforce but to maintain our first-class reputation as a diligent roofing contractor that provides a high-quality service both on and off a roof.

Working at height on an industrial or commercial roof comes with its obvious hazards and risks and the recent Health and Safety Executive (HSE) statistics show that roof work accounts for a quarter of all deaths in the construction industry.

Falls from an unprotected edge or through fragile or brittle roofing materials, such as roof lights or asbestos cement sheets, account for the majority of fatalities. There are also many serious injuries as a result of a fall and these can often result in permanent life-changing injuries.

We also have to deal with the inconsistent weather that comes with working and living in the UK. We carefully manage how to deal with and respond to any extremes of weather such as high winds or hot and cold temperatures to ensure our roofing operatives are not put at any additional risk.

There is a range of laws that is relevant to health and safety in the construction industry that we work closely with. The main elements of these are as follows:

Health and Safety at Work Act (1974)

    Work at Height Regulations (2005)

Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (1999)

Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (2015)

Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (1998)

Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (1998)

To make things even safer before we start working on an industrial or commercial roof, we have purchased a drone to undertake all roof inspections and surveys. This has totally eliminated the risk of working at height at the quoting and initial stage of a potential new project.

Our drone operators are able to capture high-resolution imagery and record footage which can then be turned into videos and/or presentations for the client to clearly view our findings and recommended solutions.

Further to this, we ensure our workforce is kitted out with the most suitable PPE (personal protective equipment) and they have the right tools and machinery to work both safely and effectively. All PPE and tools are correctly maintained to ensure they’re fit for purpose and remain in good working order.

We also ensure that our workforce receives regular training and refreshers to use their PPE and equipment safely as stated by the guidelines of the respective manufacturers. The training that we participate in allows us to maintain our position as one of the market leaders in our field of expertise.

“But They Were The Cheapest Quote”

Have you heard the famous quote: ‘the bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten?’

As well as the above by Benjamin Franklin back in the 1700s, there’s another well-known saying that we all hear on a regular basis which is ‘choose quality over quantity. You can apply this to most things in life but not everyone will choose to go down the quality path depending on a number of reasons.

The main reason will more than likely be a financial one as when you hear the word quality banded about you instantly think it’s going to be expensive and more than you can afford to pay. This isn’t always the case, and another well-known saying springs to mind which is ‘buy cheap, pay twice’ and this is probably something we’ve all experienced during our lifetime.

With regard to industrial roofing and commercial roofing, we know that we’re not the cheapest roofing contractor out there. If you were to obtain three quotes for a roofing project, we probably wouldn’t be the cheapest. However, we are confident that we will do the best job for you and your property.

By adopting best practices towards our approach to health and safety and having an unwavering commitment to our ongoing training programme we are good value for money. Our teams are both highly skilled and experienced and go the extra mile to make sure your needs and expectations are fully met.

Our entire business model is based on a quality ethos in everything that we do. We set our standards to a very high level and continue to raise the bar. We’re an award-winning company (we’ve won the NFRC Gold Award for Health and Safety for the last 6 years) that does things by the book and we take no shortcuts along the way to leave a thoroughly professional job.

We bang the quality drum quite a lot but this is what we stand for and we won’t lower our standards or your expectations just to win a roofing contract. We want you to feel like you have made the right choice from the moment you make an initial enquiry all the way through to completing your project.

A price for an industrial or commercial roofing project often reflects the standard of safety, workmanship and materials. Cost shouldn’t be the determining factor if you want your new roof to be fit for purpose and long-lasting, as well as being installed correctly to the manufacturer’s guidelines so all guarantees are valid.

It is said far too often that the final decision will be made on cost alone, without regard to the quality of what is being offered or if it is indeed ‘apples for apples.’ It is so easy to assume that because a new roof has been requested, everything that has been priced will include similar materials and equal levels of safety on site.

This was recently proven with a client receiving costs for a new roof covering. It was not until the offerings were investigated further that it was discovered that our proposal was far in excess of our competition. Our quotation included a longer manufacturer guarantee on materials, stainless steel fixings and higher-performing insulation. Sometimes the devil is in the detail.

Earn Money with your Industrial Roof

The government has this week announced a ban on the sale of new diesel and petrol cars by 2030. This revised date has brought forward the government’s original target by 10 years and is a key part of their wider plan to make the UK carbon neutral by 2050

The RAC has responded to this development and said that the UK’s charging network would have to grow “exponentially” to cope with the demand when sales of electric vehicles (EV) soar as the date of the restrictions is near.

So, what’s this got to do with industrial and commercial roofing we hear you say? Well, the places where EV owners will be working such as offices, warehouses and factories are going to need somewhere to charge their car whilst at work. The infrastructure to cope with this extra demand will need to significantly increase and this is where we can help.

We’ve recently strengthened our presence in the commercial solar industry as a trusted installer of quality solar PV systems. In collaboration with our partners, we are able to provide a solution that meets the exact requirements of your property.

Not only does solar PV help to reduce the overall energy consumption of the workplace, it will also maximise the return on investment (ROI) and instantly increases the value of your commercial property. It really is a win-win situation for you and your staff who will need to charge their EVs.

Furthermore, if your commercial property was built before 1999, it is more than likely to have some kind of asbestos element within your roof. Recent government rulings state that asbestos has to be removed from all buildings before 2035, and we strongly advise you to take advantage of the 150% tax benefit of the cost by removing asbestos as part of your solar PV installation.

Forward-thinking businesses are already reaping the rewards of harnessing energy from the sun and now is the perfect time to seriously consider solar power. A commercial solar PV system offers a fantastic addition to any business be it on a small or large scale and helps your business work towards a more sustainable future.

To discover more about our commercial solar PV solutions and associated financial benefits for your business, please don’t hesitate to contact the Retain team on 0800 027 2244 or fill out our contact form below and we’ll be in touch.

Is Solar Energy a Good Investment?

According to the BBC, the UK is being hit by roughly a 54% increase in energy prices and it is set to increase again in October 2022

A worldwide price increase in fossil fuels has seen the sharpest rise in UK energy costs in over 30 years and they will increase again by the coming winter. This has given rise to the importance of cleaner, renewable energy sources, in particular, solar energy.

Industrial and commercial property owners are turning to PV solar panels to offset some of the costs of their energy consumption. Many of these buildings have a lot of unused roof space, waiting to be utilised to harness the power of the sun. But what are the benefits?

To start, the sun is a free source of renewable energy accessible by anyone. It also appeals to consumers when they know that your business is making efforts to become as carbon neutral as possible. Renewable energy has been a hot topic for decades and can make or break a potential client or customer’s decision to buy from you.

There is also the potential to offset a large proportion of your energy costs. This could also leave you with the opportunity to sell energy back to the national grid any excess energy you can’t utilise. Aligning your company with the UK pledge to hit net zero emissions by 2050 could also see more benefits further down the road. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has recently released their latest climate change report stating that “The evidence is clear: the time for action is now. We can halve emissions by 2030 ”making it an ever-increasing importance to become as carbon neutral as possible.

The Centre for Alternative Technology has a handy tool that you can use to work out how much your PV solar system will produce. You can also work backwards with this calculation to work out how big your system needs to be, compared to your energy consumption needs. It’s important to know this information and to consult a professional so that you get the correct system installed.

Although solar panels can be a costly investment, there are schemes out there that can help property owners achieve their energy goals. The Solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) can help alleviate the upfront costs of installing a solar system. The manufacturer will design, supply, install and own the system, while the property owner pays a subsidised fee for energy to offset the cost of the installation. At the end of the contract (usually between 10-25 years) the property owner can remove the installation, buy the installation or extend the PPA contract. There are also other financial options as outlined in our Finance section.

Overall and over a relatively short time, you could see the benefits of having a PV solar system far outweigh the initial monetary costs and will help your company and the UK move toward a cleaner future.

Retain Energy have a working relationship with Q-CELLS and SolarEdge, two of the leading solar equipment manufacturers, to give you a professional and high-quality service and system. To learn more about these services, or anything else related to your energy needs, contact the Retain Energy team on 0800 027 2244 or fill in our contact form to request a callback.

    Industrial & Commercial Roofing Training

Retain Limited prides itself on its commitment to continuous training to ensure our staff have as much opportunity as possible to keep improving and move forward with their roofing careers

This begins at the top where our director and company founder (Jamie Gibbs) is the regional Chair for the Institute of Roofing (IoR). This role is responsible for encouraging like-minded professionals to embrace collaborative learning to ultimately improve the day-to-day aspect of the industrial and commercial roofing industry.

A key reason we also invest in training is to ensure that our professional and dedicated workforce is kept up to date with the latest regulations and practices that our industry adopts. It’s our aim to be at the forefront of our industry and the training we undertake allows us to be one of the market leaders in our field of expertise.

Other training that we regularly undertake with our staff is provided through manufacturers whose products we regularly use on our roofing projects. This could be how to fit a certain type of cladding properly or learning how to use working at heights equipment in a safe and competent manner.

We like to prove and give confidence to our clients that our roofing staff are competent, safe and formally qualified to work on construction sites. This is the least we can do to make sure they have all the necessary tools and knowledge to deliver beyond what is expected of them.

Jamie Gibbs said: “It’s our aim to recruit and train young people into the industrial and commercial roofing industry and to provide them with the foundation for an exciting, rewarding and successful career.

“We also invest heavily in our training programme to give our clients the best possible service and customer experience when we’re out on site doing what we do best.

“I believe that training and investment in staff should be the backbone of any successful business and this is something that we will continue to do for the foreseeable future.”
